All three build methods are used across Ontario and Atlantic Canada, and each has a legitimate case. We build concrete, so treat this as an informed but interested opinion, and weigh it accordingly.
Gunite, also called concrete
Gunite is a sand and cement mixture sprayed at high pressure over a steel reinforcement cage that is shaped on site. Because the shell is formed in place, there is no restriction on shape, depth, or integrated features. Negative edges, tanning ledges, integrated spas, custom steps and unusual geometry are all straightforward.
It is the most involved method and the slowest to build, typically a single season for a full project. In return it has by far the longest service life, and the interior finish can be renewed decades later without replacing the structure. In freeze-thaw climates a properly engineered concrete shell is the most durable option available.
Fibreglass
A fibreglass pool is a factory-moulded shell delivered and set into an excavation. Installation is fast, often a matter of weeks, and the smooth gel-coat surface is easy on feet and resists algae well, which keeps chemical use modest.
The constraint is that you choose from a catalogue. Size is limited by what can be trucked and craned to the property, depth options are fixed, and features are limited to what the mould includes. In our climate the critical detail is backfill and hydrostatic management, because an improperly handled water table can shift or float a shell.
Vinyl liner
Vinyl pools use a supported wall system with a fitted liner. They install quickly and allow reasonable flexibility in shape, which makes them a common choice for straightforward rectangular pools.
The liner is a consumable. Expect replacement roughly every decade, sooner if it is exposed to sharp objects, pets or heavy UV. That replacement cycle is worth factoring in when weighing vinyl against concrete over a twenty-year horizon.
How they compare
- Customisation: concrete is unrestricted, vinyl is moderate, fibreglass is limited to catalogue shapes.
- Build time: fibreglass is fastest, vinyl is quick, concrete takes a season.
- Surface: fibreglass is smooth gel coat, vinyl is a fitted membrane, concrete takes plaster, aggregate or polished finishes.
- Service life: concrete is longest by a wide margin, fibreglass is long with intact gel coat, vinyl requires periodic liner replacement.
- Freeze-thaw performance: concrete is the most robust when properly engineered, and the most vulnerable when it is not.
Which one to choose
If the priority is getting swimming quickly with minimal disruption, fibreglass or vinyl is a reasonable answer, and a good builder will tell you so. If the pool is meant to be an architectural part of the property, to include features like a negative edge or an integrated spa, or to still look right in twenty years, concrete is the method that supports it.
The decision that matters more than the material is the builder. A well-built vinyl pool outlasts a badly built concrete one every time.

Is a concrete pool better than fibreglass in Canada?
For customisation and long-term durability, yes, provided it is engineered for freeze-thaw conditions. Fibreglass installs faster with less disruption, but shape, size and depth are limited to manufactured shells.
How long does a vinyl pool liner last?

Can gunite pools crack in cold climates?
